With a rivalry on the magnitude of the Iron Bowl, there is really no need for any additional motivation to increase the intensity of the game. But with Alabama coming into the game with an undefeated season on the line, a win would have made a lackluster season for Auburn a lot more bearable. It seemed as though that’s the way it was going to go early in the game as Auburn jumped out to a big first quarter lead. But the Crimson Tide remained poised and fought back into it. Yet the game and the undefeated season seemed to be slipping away from Alabama again in the fourth quarter, then the Crimson Tide, led by quarterback Greg McElroy, put together a drive for the ages and pulled of the stunning victory. That drive has since come to be known simply as “The Drive”.
