NEW ORLEANS, La. – Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 230 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, including an 85-yard touchdown run, and Buckeyes quarterback Cardale Jones threw for 243 yards in only his second career start to lead No. 4 Ohio State (13-1 overall) to a 42-35 victory over No. 1-seedeed Alabama (12-2) in the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl before a crowd of 74,682 on Thursday night in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome (capacity: 72,500).
With the victory, Ohio State advanced to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game to take on No. 2 seed Oregon (13-1), which defeated No. 3 seed Florida State, 59-20, in the other CFP Semifinal at the Rose Bowl earlier in the day.
Alabama lost after leading, 21-6, in the second quarter as numerous big plays on third downs by the Buckeyes offense turned the direction of the game in Ohio State’s favor. The Buckeyes scored 28 unanswered points in the second and third quarters before the Crimson Tide regained their footing and narrowed the margin within a touchdown on two occasions. But an interception return for a touchdown by OSU in the third period and big plays at crucial times by the OSU offense stifled an Alabama comeback.
Ohio State racked up 537 yards of total offense (281 rushing, 256 passing) while converting 10 of 18 third downs into first downs in the game. Alabama had 407 total yards (237 passing, 170 rushing), but the Buckeyes controlled the tempo of the game from the second quarter on.
Crimson Tide quarterback Blake Sims passed for 237 yards and 2 touchdowns while completing 22 of 36 attempts. But three interceptions, two in the OSU end zone and another that was returned for a touchdown, were crucial to the outcome. Running back Derrick Henry rushed for 95 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Wide receiver Amari Cooper caught 9 passes for 71 yards and 2 touchdowns. Henry also had a catch for 52 yards in the game.
The Alabama defense was led in tackles by safety Landon Collins, who overcame an injury early in the game to garner 12 tackles (9 solos), one tackle for loss and broke up a pass. Linebacker Reggie Ragland had 7 tackles (2 solos) with 2 tackles for losses, but also was injured during the game. The Tide defense made 11 tackles for losses, broke up 7 passes, forced a fumble, and sacked Jones 3 times in the game.
Punter JK Scott capped an outstanding freshman season by averaging 55.0 yards on 7 punts in the game, including a 73-yarder and 5 punts that were downed inside the Ohio State 20-yard line. Five of Scott’s punts went 50 yards or more.
The loss drops Alabama to 8-7 all-time in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Ohio State won the opening coin toss and elected to defer a decision to the second half. Alabama chose to receive the opening kickoff. The opening kickoff was downed in the end zone for a touchback. Alabama began the possession at its own 25. On first down, Amari Cooper took a receiver jet sweep for a gain of 5 yards to the 30. On second down, running back Derrick Henry took a handoff for two yards at right guard to the 32. On third down a pass by Sims for Cooper was incomplete down the right sideline, forcing a punt. JK Scott’s 53-yard punt was caught by OSU’s Jalin Marshall at the OSU 15 where he was downed immediately by Landon Collins.
Ohio State began its first possession at its 15 with 13:58 on the clock. On first down, running back Ezekiel Elliott gained 4 yards around left end to the 19. On second down, a pass by Cardale Jones to Evan Spencer was incomplete. On third and 6 from the 19, Jones rushed for 12 yards on a scramble to the OSU 31 and a first down. After a loss of 3 yards on a run by halfback Jalin Marshall created a second and 13 at the OSU 41, Elliott took a handoff around right end and raced 54 yards down the right sideline to a first down at the Tide 5 where Nick Perry brought him down. Elliott’s run was the longest running play given up all season by the Alabama defense to that point. On first and goal at the Tide 5, Jones kept around left end for no gain as Landon Collins knocked him out of bounds. OSU called timeout with 11:46 on the clock, the first timeout of the game. On second and goal, a pass from Jones for wide receiver Evan Spencer was incomplete in the end zone. On third and goal at the Tide 5, Jones was pressured by Tide linebacker Ryan Anderson and threw the pass out of the end zone incomplete. Sean Nuernberger entered to kick a 22-yard field goal. The kick was good and Ohio State had a 3-0 lead with 11:32 on the clock after an 80-yard drive in 10 plays.
Christion Jones returned the kickoff from the goal line and was downed by Corey Smith after a 12-yard return. Alabama began at its 12. On first down, Sims passed to Cooper on a curl route that gained 6 yards to the 18-yard line. On second and 4, Henry lost a yard on a carry up the middle when he was tripped up by a teammate. On third and 5 at the 17, a pass intended for Cooper over the middle was incomplete, forcing a punt. Scott entered and blasted a 73-yard punt that sailed over Jalin Marshall’s head, Marshall picking it up off a bounce at his 10 and returning it 10 yards to the 20 where he was belted by Jarrick Williams, with Marshall losing his helmet due to the tackle.
OSU began at its 20 with 10:02 on the clock. On first down, Elliott rushed for 17 yards at right end and fumbled when hit by Tide linebacker Trey DePriest. Landon Collins recovered the fumble at the 37 and returned it 4 yards to the OSU 33. The Tide took over there with 9:53 on the clock.
On first down, Sims kept at right guard for 8 yards to the 25. On second down, Henry took a pitchout to the left side and raced 25 yards for a touchdown to give Alabama the lead with 9:25 on the clock. Adam Griffith’s extra point was good and the Tide led, 7-3.
Griffith kicked off after the touchdown. The kick went through the end zone for a touchback and the Buckeyes began the possession at their own 25. On first down, Elliott took a handoff at left end for 11 yards and a first down at the OSU 36. On first down, Jones threw incomplete out of bounds. On second and 10 at the OSU 36, Elliott gained 2 yards on a carry up the middle to set up third and 8 at the OSU 38. Jones looked to pass from the shotgun, then decided to keep and ran up the middle for 20 yards and a first down at the Tide 42. On first down, a pass by Jones for Marshall was incomplete at the Tide 20. On second and 10 at the 42, Jones kept around left tackle from the shotgun and gained a yard to the Tide 41. On third and 9 at the 41, Jones passed deep down the right sideline to receiver Devin Smith who caught the ball at the Tide 4 and gained to the Tide 1 before going out of bounds as Tide safety Jabriel Washington was beaten on the play. Alabama called timeout with 6:51 on the clock, the Tide’s first timeout of the half. On first down at the Tide 1 from the shotgun with an empty backfield, Jones bobbled the center snap and was sacked for a loss of 8 yards by Landon Collins at the Tide 9. On second and goal at the 9, Jones scrambled to his right and passed complete to tight end Nick Vannett for 5 yards to the Tide 4. On third and goal at the 4, Jones pass to Marshall at the right side at the goal line was incomplete. Nuernberger kicked a 21-yard field goal to draw OSU within 7-6 with 5:17 on the clock.
Christion Jones took the kickoff at the goal line and returned it up the middle for 21 yards. Alabama began the possession at its 21. On first down from an I formation, Sims pitched out to Henry around left end and Henry took it for an 11-yard gain to the 32 and a personal foul for a hit out of bounds by OSU cornerback Eli Apple moved the ball 15 more yards to the Tide 47. On the next play, Henry carried for 8 yards to the OSU 45. On second and 2 a pass to DeAndrew White was short and incomplete. Alabama called it second timeout of the half after lining up with 4:18 left in the quarter. On third down, running back T.J. Yeldon entered the game for the first time and took a handoff at right guard for 9 yards to a first down at the OSU 36. On first down from the shotgun a handoff to Henry around left end gained 7 yards to the OSU 29. On second and 3, Henry took a carry up the middle and dove for 4 yards to a first down at the OSU 25. From the shotgun on the next play, Sims passed to fullback Jalston Fowler at the right sideline for 10 yards to a first down at the OSU 15. Sims faked a pitch left to Yeldon then bootlegged to the right and threw complete to a wide open Cooper in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Griffith’s kick was good and Alabama led, 14-6, with 2:06 left in the first quarter after a 79-yard drive in 8 plays that consumed 3:05.
Curtis Samuel took Griffith’s kickoff at the OSU 2 and returned it 10 yards before Michael Nysewander downed him at the OSU 12. On first down a shuttle pass from Jones to Marshall was stopped for 2 yards by Eddie Jackson at the OSU 14. On second and 8 at the 14, Jones was sacked by Tide linebacker Xzavier Dickson for a loss of 12 at the OSU 2. On third and 20 at the OSU 2, Elliott took a handoff up the middle for 12 yards to the OSU 14, forcing a punt. That carry gave Elliott 100 rushing yards already in the game, on only 6 carries. That ended the first quarter with OSU about to punt.
The second quarter began with an Ohio State punt. Cameron Johnston punted from the OSU 14. Christion Jones took Johnson’s 57-yard punt at the Tide 29 and returned it 10 yards to the Tide 39 where Alabama took possession with 14:46 left in the half. On first down, Sims passed to Cooper on a short out route for a gain of 7 to the Tide 46. On second down a jet screen to Cooper was stopped for no gain by OSU’s Darron Lee at the Tide 46. On third and 3 at the 46, a run up the middle by Yeldon gained a yard to the 47, forcing a punt. From the Tide 47, Scott was set to punt but the play clock expired and Alabama was penalized 5 yards for delay of game. Scott punted 53 yards to Marshall at the OSU 5 where Marshall fair caught it and OSU took possession with 12:51 left in the half.
On first down at the OSU 5, Jones handed to Elliott who took the carry up the middle for a gain of 9 to the OSU 14. On second down, Marshall took a jet sweep for a gain of 1 to a first down at the 15. On first down, Jones was pressured while looking to pass and threw complete for no gain at the 15 to Michael Thomas. On second and 10 at the 15, Jones’ pass was knocked down at the line of scrimmage by Tide nose guard A’Shawn Robinson and fell incomplete. On third and 10 at the 15, Jones passed complete to Thomas for a gain of 14 yards to a first down at the OSU 29. A run at right guard by Elliott gained 2 yards on first down to the 31. On second down, Jones passed to his left and Tide cornerback Cyrus Jones intercepted for Alabama at the OSU 47, returning it 32 yards to the OSU 15 where Elliott forced him out of bounds with 10:09 on the clock.
From the 15 on first down, Sims passed under pressure complete to tight end Brian Vogler for a gain of 4 to the OSU 11. On second down at the 11, Sims faked a handoff to Henry and passed to Vogler in the right flat for 5 yards to the OSU 6. On third and 1, Yeldon carried at right tackle for no gain. On fourth and 1 at the 6, Yeldon took a handoff up the middle for 4 yards to a first down at the OSU 2. On first down, Sims handed to Yeldon who took it 2 yards into the end zone at right guard for a touchdown with 8:07 on the clock. Griffith’s conversion kick was good and Alabama led, 21-6, after cashing in its second turnover gained into a score.
On the ensuing kickoff, Samuels returned the kick 13 yards to the OSU 14 where Reuben Foster nailed him. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by Alabama’s Maurice Smith resulted in a 15-yard penalty on Alabama and Smith was ejected from the game. The ball was moved to the OSU 29. On first down, a run by Elliott at right tackle gained a yard. Another carry by Elliott on second down lost a yard. On third and 10, Jones threw to Marshall across the middle for 26 yards and a first down at the Tide 45. A false start penalty on OSU moved the ball back 5 yards to the 50, creating first down at 15 yards to go. From the shotgun under pressure, Jones passed to Thomas for a gain of 6 to the Tide 44. On second and 9 at the 44, a pass intended for Corey Smith was broken up incomplete by Eddie Jackson at the Tide 34. On third and 9 at the 44, Jones found Marshall for another big play for a gain of 26 and a first down at the Tide 18. On first down, a pass for Marshall was incomplete in the end zone. On second down, Jones passed to Elliott at the left sideline and Elliott gained 13 yards to a first down at the Tide 5. On first and goal, Jones kept for a loss of a yard at the Tide 6. On second and goal at the Tide 6, a pass for tight end Nick Vannett was incomplete but Tide cornerback Eddie Jackson interfered on the play to give OSU another first down at the Tide 5. On first down at the 5, Marshall took a shuttle pass from Jones and lost a yard as Trey DePriest wrapped him up at the Tide 6. Tide safety Landon Collins was injured on the play and time was called at 4:00 on the clock as trainers tended to Collins, who left the field and immediately went to the locker room for an evaluation of an undetermined injury. Play resumed with OSU facing a second and goal at the Tide 6 with 4:00 on the clock. The second down play was run by Elliott up the middle that gained 3 yards to the Tide 3 where Dickson made the stop. Another timeout for an injury, this one to OSU center Jacoby Boren, stopped the clock at 3:20 and Boren left the field on his own power. On third and goal from the Tide 3, Elliott took a handoff up the middle for a 3-yard touchdown with 2:55 left in the half. Nuernberger kicked the extra point and the Alabama lead was cut to 21-13 after a 12-play, 71-yard drive by the Buckeyes. OSU was now 7 of 10 on third downs, accounting for a large chunk of their impressive yardage total to this point in the game.
With 2:55 left in the half, Ohio State kicked off with Alabama holding an 8-point lead. The Buckeyes had 2 timeous left while the Crimson Tide had 1 timeout left. Christion Jones took the kickoff in the corner of the field at his own 3 and returned it only 7 yards to the Tide 10 where OSU’s Corey Smith took him down. On first down, a quick pass to Cooper gained 6 at the left sideline. On second and 4 at the 16, Sims passed to White at the sideline for a gain of 2 to the 18. On third down and 2 at the 18, Sims’ pass to White was dropped at the Tide 23 to force a punt by Scott with 1:41 on the clock. Scott’s 59-yard punt was fair caught by Marshall at the OSU 23 with 1:32 left.
OSU took over with 1:32 left and having 2 timeouts. On first down from the OSU 23, Jones passed to Thomas for a gain of 14 as Thomas wriggled out of a tackle to get the first down. On first down from the OSU 37, Jones passed to Smith for a gain of 5 to the 42. On second down, a pass to Vannett gained 18 to the Tide 40 and a first down. At the 40, Jones kept after looking to pass and ran for 27 yards to a first down at the Tide 13. On the next play, Jones could not find an open receiver and threw incomplete with 19 seconds left. Lined up for a second and 10 at the Tide 13, OSU called its second timeout of the half. The second down play was a double reverse pass where wide receiver Devin Smith passed to receiver Michael Thomas who caught the ball along the sideline for a touchdown with 12 seconds left in the half. Nuernberger’s kick was good and the score was Alabama 21, Ohio State 20 following a 77-yard drive in 6 plays that took only 1:20 of the clock.
Ohio State had 348 total yards in the game, with impressive balance by rushing for 167 yards and throwing for 181 more. The Buckeyes were in control of the game everywhere except the scoreboard, where they trailed by a point. Christion Jones took the ensuing kickoff at the 19 and returned it 10 yards to the 29. Alabama had 6 seconds on the clock. Sims took the snap and took a knee for a loss of a yard to end the half.
At the half, Ohio State had gained 150 yards on third-down plays (106 passing, 44 rushing), making plays of 12, 12 and 20 yards via the rush and 26, 26, 14 and 40 via the pass for an average of 15.0 yards per play on third downs (10 plays, 150 yards).
Alabama kicked off to start the second half. Adam Griffith’s kickoff was downed for a touchback and Ohio State began at its 25. The drive started with Jones passing to Thomas for 11 yards on first down to the 36, then again to Thomas 8 yards to the OSU 44. Elliott rushed for 7 yards at left guard to the Tide 49. After an incompletion, a pass to Marshall gained 2 yards to the Tide 47. On third down and 8 at the Tide 47, Jones passed to Devin Smith for a 47-yard touchdown with 12:44 left. Nuernberger’s extra-point kick was good and Ohio State led, 27-21.
Christion Jones returned the ensuing kickoff 7 yards from the Tide 12 to the Tide 19. On the first play, Sims kept for a gain of 18 to the Tide 37. On the next play, Yeldon rushed for 8 yards at left end to the Tide 45. But Sims was sacked on consecutive plays, for a loss of 6 to the Tide 39 on second down and for a loss of 9 to the Tide 30 on third and 8. Scott rocketed a 65-yard punt that rolled dead at the Buckeye 5-yard line and Ohio State’s offense took the ball at its own 5-yard line with 10:38 left in the third period.
A rush by Elliott gained 4 to the 9. A rush by Jones gained 6 to the 15 and a first down. A rush by Elliott for 7 yards reached the OSU 22. After an incomplete pass on second down, Jones ran for 12 and a first down on a third and 3 play, reaching the OSU 34. Jones passed to Evan Spencer for 7 yards on first down, then a rush by Elliott on second down gained 2 to the OSU 43. On third and 1, a run at left end by Noah Brown was stopped for a loss of 4 at the OSU 39 by Reggie Ragland, forcing a punt. Johnston’s punt went for 60 yards and rolled dead at the Tide 1 with 6:31 left in the third period.
Yeldon rushed for a yard on first down, then ran for 10 yards to the 12 and a first down. Henry ran at left end for 21 yards and a first down at the Tide 33. A pass from Sims to Fowler gained 4 to the 37, then Henry was stopped for a loss of a yard at right tackle on second down. On third and 7 at the Tide 36, a pass by Sims for Cooper was intercepted by OSU defensive end Steve Miller at the 41, which Miller returned 41 yards for a touchdown. On the next play, Henry took a short pass from Sims and rumbled 52 yards to the OSU 17. Yeldon ran for 7 at right end to the OSU 10, then for 5 more to the OSU 5 and a first down. After an incomplete pass on first down, Sims took a keeper up the middle for a 5-yard touchdown to complete an 84-yard drive. Griffith’s kick was good and the Tide had narrowed the margin to 34-28 with 1:01 left in the third period.
The kickoff was downed for a touchback, so the Buckeyes began the possession at their 25. On first down, Jones rushed at right guard for 5 to the 30. Elliott was stopped for a loss of 2 on second down at the OSU 32 by Ragland and DePriest as the quarter ended.
The fourth quarter began with OSU facing a third and 3 at the Buckeye 32. Jones tried a rush at right guard on third down but was stopped for a loss of 5 at the OSU 27 by Jonathan Allen. Alabama took over at the Buckeye 23 with 9:53 remaining. Sims rolled right and threw for tight end O.J. Howard in the end zone but OSU safety Vonn Bell intercepted at the OSU 1 and returned it 7 yards to the Buckeye 8 with 9:44 on the clock.
On first down from the shotgun, Jones was sacked by Jonathan Allen for a loss of 4 at the OSU 4. On second and 14 at the OSU 4 from the shotgun with no backs in the backfield, Jones’ pass was incomplete. On third and 14 at the OSU 4 from the shotgun, a pass for Thomas was short and incomplete at the 12, forcing a punt. Johnston entered to punt with 8:55 on the clock. Christion Jones took Johnston’s 51-yard punt at the 45 and was downed immediately. A 5-yard penalty for running into the kicker was declined. With 5:24 on the clock, OSU started the possession at its own 5-yard line with a 34-28 lead. On first down, Elliott carried at right tackle for a gain of 4 to the OSU 9. On second and 6 at the OSU 9, Jones kept at right end for a gain of 5 to the OSU 14. On third and 1 at the 14, Jones took the snap from the shotgun and kept for a gain of 1 to a first down at the OSU 15. Landon Collins made the tackle and was injured on the play. Collins left the field looking fine with 4:02 on the clock. On first and 10 at the OSU 15, Elliott took a handoff at left tackle and ran through a seam into the clear, racing untouched 85 yards for a touchdown with 3:24 left. The Buckeyes went for two and converted with Jones throwing to Thomas for the conversion to give Ohio State a 42-28 lead with 3:24 left in the quarter. Elliott now had 230 yards rushing on 20 carries, with two touchdowns.
Christion Jones took the kickoff at the Tide 1 and returned it 34 yards to the Tide 35. Alabama started the possession with 3:16 left. On first down, Sims’ throwback pass for tight end O.J. Howard was incomplete. On second down, Sims found DeAndrew White on a streak pattern for a 51-yard pass play to the OSU 14. On first down, Sims’ pass to Henry was deflected and incomplete. On second down at the OSU 14, Sims’ pass for Cooper at the right sideline was high and incomplete with 2:33 left. With 1:59 left, Alabama had 2 timeouts remaining while Ohio State had all 3 of its timeouts left. Griffith and the Tide set up for an onside kick from the Tide 35. The kick was fielded by a leaping Evan Spencer at the OSU 49 with 1:57 on the clock. On first down, Jones passed deep for Spencer at the Tide 5 but the pass was broken up by Cyrus Jones. Ohio State called its first timeout with 1:50 on the clock, their first used timeout of the half. Both teams now had two timeouts remaining. When play resumed on second and 10 for OSU at their own 49, a run by Curtis Samuel at left tackle gained a yard to the 50. Alabama called timeout, the Tide’s second of the half, with 1:45 on the clock. OSU needed 9 yards on third down at the 50. Jones rolled to his right and was sacked for a loss of 11 yards by safety Nick Perry at the OSU 39. Alabama used its final timeout with 1:39 on the clock. Johnston entered the game to punt. On first down, a pass to Howard gained 6 to the 24. A pass to Black gained 2 to the 26. With the clock running under 50 second, Sims found White for 12 and a first down at the Tide 38. Sims kept on the next play for 12 to the 50. On first down, a pass to Howard gained 8 to the 42 as Howard went out of bounds to stop the clock with 15 seconds left.
