TUSCALOOSA, Ala. –
The University of Alabama athletics department is 18th in the recently released CBS Sports Best in College Sports rankings following a season that saw football and gymnastics both post fourth-place national finishes.
The CBS Sports Best in College Sports rankings use a weighted formula that assigns points for finishes in five sports — football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball and baseball – plus a “wild card” sport.
Alabama earned 240 points for its fourth place national finish in football and 20 points for the men’s basketball team’s berth in the NIT. The Crimson Tide gymnastics team earned 80 points in the wild card slot after taking fourth at the NCAA Championships. Overall, the Tide tallied 340 points.
Ohio State lead the rankings with 550 points followed by Louisville (488), UCLA (480.5), Oregon (468) and Florida State (462). Arkansas is the only other Southeastern Conference school to earn a spot in the top 20, coming in at 16th. SEC schools Georgia (21) and LSU (23) also made the top 25.
