Ex-assistant Malzahn takes Auburn coaching job
Auburn has turned to Gus Malzahn to restore a program that made an unprecedented fall two years after winning the national title with Cam Newton operating the then-assistant coach’s high-powered offense to perfection. Malzahn was the Tigers’ offensive coordinator during their 2010 national championship run before heading to Arkansas State for his first college head coaching position. He received a five-year contract worth $2.3 million annually to try to get the team back on solid footing.

The Fighting Irish moved up from No. 3 to the No. 1 spot because it is now the last eligible undefeated team in the country. Notre Dame is the third new No. 1 team in the past three weeks. “Now we don’t have to answer questions about style points or politics,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said. “Now we have a chance to play for the national championship this week.” Notre Dame, ranked No. 1 in both polls and by the computer ratings, needs only to beat slumping rival Southern California on Saturday in Los Angeles to earn its first trip to the BCS title game. On Saturday, old No. 1 Kansas State lost at Baylor 52-24, and No. 2 Oregon fell in overtime to Stanford, 17-14. No. 2 Alabama filled the vacuum and regained its spot in the national championship, with SEC compatriots Georgia at No. 3 and Florida No. 4.o. 1 in the land and the SEC has regained it superiority near the top of the BCS standings.
K-State tops BCS as Ducks take 2nd with Bama 4th

Spurrier: Alabama can beat some NFL teams

However, the ol’ ball coach says Nick Saban and powerhouse Alabama have what it takes to compete at the highest level. “Alabama, gosh, they look like they could beat a couple of those NFL teams that I’ve watched on Sundays,” Spurrier said Wednesday on “The Dan Patrick Show.” “I think a lot of the oddsmakers out there that usually know what’s going on, I’d guess Alabama would be favored by a little bit.”
Lattimore hyperextended knee, hurt ligaments
South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore hyperextended his right knee against Tennessee, causing injury to several ligaments, the school said in a release Sunday. Coach Steve Spurrier said the injury is something Lattimore can come back from to play football again. There were no fractures or additional injuries, according to team physician Jeffrey Guy.
KSU, ND move up in AP poll; Bama still No. 1
No. 3 Kansas State and No. 4 Notre Dame each moved up a spot in The Associated Press college football poll, setting up a final four of sorts for the last month of the regular season. Alabama is No. 1 for the ninth straight week and it is unanimous. The Crimson Tide received all 60 first-place votes. Oregon is No. 2 for the sixth straight week.

Ex-Vols WR Rogers to play for Tennessee Tech
Da’Rick Rogers officially has left Tennessee’s football team, just not the state’s borders. The former all-Southeastern Conference wide receiver has transferred to Football Championship Subdivision program Tennessee Tech, the school confirmed Monday afternoon. The move was announced four days after Tennessee indefinitely suspended Rogers for a violation of team rules.
