TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball fell, 8-2, to South Alabama on Wednesday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. With the loss, the Crimson Tide moves to 23-15 on the season.
“I thought the game got away from us there in the fourth when they ran up the five spot,” said Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard. “They put some good at-bats together along with the double steal, and we broke down in a couple spots. On the offensive end, we just didn’t generate enough. We had a few opportunities there and we just didn’t put enough good swings on it to pressure their defense.”
Alabama struck first to take a 1-0 lead after three, but a five-run fourth by South Alabama proved the difference in Wednesday’s game.
The Crimson Tide gained the early 1-0 advantage, plating a run in the bottom of the third. A pair of singles from Hunter Webb and Georgie Salem brought Chandler Avant to the plate with two down. The Tide’s shortstop delivered, sending a single back up the chute to score one and put UA in front.
South Alabama rallied back to take a lead of their own, scoring five runs on five hits in the top of the fourth to take the 5-1 lead. With the bases loaded, USA used three singles and a wild pitch to bring its five across. The Jaguars added two in the fifth and one in the seventh to make it an 8-1 game after seven.
In the home half of the eighth, Alabama was able to add one run. Avant sent a one-out double to right for his third hit of the night. One out later, Chance Vincent brought the runner home with a single to center to make an 8-2 game, but the Crimson Tide would get no closer.
Avant extended his hitting streak to seven games and his streak for consecutive games at home with a hit moved to eight. Salem finished with a hit to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
A roadtrip to College Station is next for Alabama as the Crimson Tide squares off with the third-ranked Texas A&M Aggies for a three-game weekend series. First pitch of Friday’s contest is set for 6:30 p.m. CT with Saturday’s start penciled in for 2 p.m. CT. The Sunday finale is slated to begin at 1 p.m. CT on getaway day. All three games will air live on SECN+.
