TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama football team took part in the second and final scrimmage of the fall on Saturday afternoon inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.
The scrimmage lasted roughly 125 plays and was just over two hours on a hot and humid day. The temperatures for the day hung around the mid-90s with only a few clouds scattered throughout the sky.
“I thought there was a lot of improvement out there today,” said Alabama head coach Nick Saban. “It took a lot of mental toughness to grind through the conditions we were in. I thought at the beginning of the scrimmage, the two first-teams didn’t seem to dominate like they wanted to, but as the day moved on both first-teams played a little better.”
The Crimson Tide saw progression from the first scrimmage to today’s intrasquad, with both sides of the ball showing marked improvement. The reps were doled out nearly evenly to all the quarterbacks with the running backs reaching their benchmarks for total plays in the game. ArDarius Stewart led the way on the receiving end with eight total catches for the day.
“I thought ArDarius Stewart had a really good day today” added Saban. “He had eight catches and made some really good grabs while also adjusting to the ball well. He made some contested plays, too, which was great to see.”
Alabama’s defense shined once again, with Reggie Ragland continuing to show the consistency that the coaches are looking for out of him. The special teams also put together a strong showing with Cyrus Jones returning a majority of the punts on the day and JK Scott continuing to provide dependability from the punter position.
The scrimmage was Alabama’s second of the fall in preparation for the season opener against Wisconsin in the AdvoCare Classic on Sept. 5. The Crimson Tide and Badgers are set for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with the game airing on ABC. Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Heather Cox will be on the call.
