OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The Alabama men’s golf team is in a tie for 10th place through two rounds in the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational.
The top-ranked Crimson Tide, one of 10 schools in the tournament that are ranked among the Golf Coaches Association of America Preseason top-25 poll, is at 596 (300-296) after 36 holes. A total of just nine strokes separate third place and 12th place heading into Sunday’s final round.
Sophomore Robby Shelton leads Alabama with a 4-over par 144 (73-71) on the famed par 70, 7,142-yard Olympia Field Country Club North Course. He will come into the final round in a tie for seventh overall, trailing the clubhouse leaders by only two strokes.
Junior Tom Lovelady is in a tie of 26th overall with an 8-over 148 (73-75). Sophomore Robby Prater had the biggest improvement by any Alabama golfer from the first to the second round, improving six strokes from Friday’s 79 to a 73 on Saturday. Prater will come into Sunday’s round in a tie for 44th with a 152.
Sophomore Dru Love is in a tie for 54th at 154 after carding back-to-back rounds of 77, while freshman Jonathan Hardee rounds out the Tide in a tie for 62nd at 157 (77-80).
Baylor, who was receiving votes to be ranked in the Golf Coaches Association of America preseason top-25 poll entering the tournament, blistered the course with a 1-under 279 on Saturday. The Bears (576) own an 8-stroke lead over tournament host and sixth-ranked Illinois (584). Florida State (589), ranked No. 17 in the nation, is in third, while co-No. 1 Oklahoma State (591) is in fourth.
Alabama will be paired with Texas and Michigan for Sunday’s third and final round. The teams will tee off on hole No. 10 beginning at 8:15 a.m. CT. Fans can follow all the live action by logging on to Golfstat.com.
