BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama’s Mazen Osama earned his second Southeastern Conference Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week honor, which was announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The Cairo, Egypt, native went 3-0 last weekend with two wins in singles and one in doubles and another two additional doubles matches going unfinished while Osama and sophomore Korey Lovett were leading. Osama, playing at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Crimson Tide, earned the second point of the match against No. 5 Oklahoma with a come-from-behind victory over reigning ITA National Collegiate Player of the Year and Big 12 Player of the Year Axel Alvarez Llamas. Osama trailed Alvarez 6-1, 4-2 in the match before battling his way back to take the second set 6-4 and eventually win the third in a tiebreaker, 7-6(7). He also picked up a win over Troy’s Vaclav Slezak in straight sets and helped win the doubles point against Lipscomb.
Following the weekend, Osama improved his season record to 6-2 in singles, including a 4-1 mark at No. 1.
