BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomores Grayson Goldin and Matthew Rossouw, freshman Spencer Richey and assistant coach Ryler DeHeart all moved on in the Player’s Choice Open to the qualifying singles round of 64 at Highland Park Tennis Center with wins on Friday.
Goldin, seeded 10th in the draw, defeated Antonio Pejic, 7-5, 6-4, while fellow newcomer Rossouw came back from a first-set loss to beat Kento Tagashira, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Richey edged out Filip Duda, 7-5, 6-3, and DeHeart posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Oliver Poysti. Redshirt freshman Langford Hills fought off a 6-0 first-set loss to come back and take the second, 7-5, over Lukas Ollert, but the former Auburn Tiger held on to take the third, 6-1.
Match play resumes in Birmingham at 10 a.m. CT where DeHeart is scheduled to take on Andrew Carter. Goldin and Rossouw are both slated for starts not before 1 p.m. and will face Hunter Reese, a former Tennesse Volunteer, and Pedro Lima Wagner, respectively. Richey closes things out for the Crimson Tide not before 2 p.m. against Iznaur Akhmaev.
