TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Eight fall tournaments and at least 14 dual matches against NCAA tournament teams from a year ago highlight the 2014-15 men’s tennis schedule, which was released by head coach George Husack on Tuesday.
“This year’s schedule will challenge our team and give us opportunities to play against some of the best teams in the country,” said Husack, who is entering his third season with the Crimson Tide. “The fall tournament season is an important one for our players to develop and fine tune their game and prepare them for January. Our non-conference schedule is solid and will have us ready to face the rigors and excitement of the SEC.”
The Tide will kick off its season on Sept. 12, when it sends representatives to both the Southern Intercollegiates in Athens, Ga., and the Harvard Chowder Fest in Cambridge, Mass. Alabama will then host its lone tournament of the fall, the Crimson Tide Four-In-The-Fall, Sept. 26-28. The ITA All-American Championships will run Sept. 29-Oct. 5, in Tulsa, followed by the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships Oct. 16-20, which will be hosted by Auburn this year. Alabama will close out its fall season with a series of USTA Futures, one in Birmingham, Ala. (Nov. 3-9) and another in Niceville, Fla. (Nov. 10-16), in addition to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 6-9.
The dual-match season gets underway on Jan. 19, with a doubleheader against Samford and UAB. Additional home opponents include Florida State (Jan. 31), Mississippi State (Feb. 27), Jackson State (March 1), Jacksonville State (March 1), Ole Miss (March 7), LSU (March 20), Texas A&M (March 22), South Carolina (April 3) and Georgia (April 5).
Alabama’s first road test will take place on Jan. 23, when the Tide heads to North Carolina for ITA Kick-Off Weekend where it will face Virginia Tech in the first round and either Oregon or the host Tar Heels on Jan. 24. Should Alabama win both those matches, the Tide would earn a spot in the National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago, Feb. 13-16. The remainder of Alabama’s road schedule includes Oklahoma State (Feb. 7), Oklahoma (Feb. 8), a trip to the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala. (Feb. 20-22), Arkansas (March 5), Auburn (March 13), Florida (March 15), Tennessee (March 27), Kentucky (March 29) and Vanderbilt (April 12).
The Southeastern Conference Tournament will be held in College Station, Texas, April 16-19. NCAA first and second rounds will take place May 9-10, at a site to be determined, while the remainder of the tournament will be played in Waco, Texas, at Baylor May 14-25.
