When the 3rd round of the college football playoff rankings were released, almost the entire Alabama fan base was in uproar over the 5th place ranking for the Crimson Tide. That essentially means that if the playoffs started today, Alabama would be the 1st team out. As Nick Saban and plenty of others have pointed out, the season doesn’t end in the middle of November. That is why he doesn’t care, and really, fans should not care either.
Releasing rankings on a weekly basis is mostly done in order to add yet another talking point during the week. Since the rankings were released, it has led to hours of debate on television, radio and message boards around the country. Alabama fan should know that they pretty much control their own destiny, so winning should be the only thing people care about.
The main reason why a lot of people were frustrated with the rankings came down to the fact that TCU surpassed them for the 4th spot. The Horned Frogs are a very good team, and things will probably play out for them favorably if they take care of their own business. Alabama’s head coach is mostly focused on beating not only Mississippi State, but Auburn as well in the regular season just to get a shot at the SEC championship game.
In a way, the ranking system in college football is a little bit like a fantasy football message board troll. Sometimes, it almost seems like a team is dropped in the rankings just to cause a little bit of controversy and get certain fan bases frustrated because they are being “disrespected.” The truth is, if Alabama wins out, no one is going to be disrespecting the best team in the SEC.
