TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 3 ranked Alabama gymnastics closes out its regular-season home schedule against long-time arch rival Georgia, ranked 10th this week, Friday at 7:30 p.m.in Coleman Coliseum. The meet features two of the most championship-laden teams in the history of collegiate gymnastics with the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs combining for 16 NCAA titles since 1987.
While the rivalry, named one of the best in collegiate athletics by ESPN, has long been a back-and-forth affair, Alabama is 13-1 against the Bulldogs over the past six years, including regular and championship-season meetings. The two teams last met in the regular season on Feb. 20, 2015 when the Tide used its highest regular-season road score of that season to come away with a 197.675-196.825 win in Athens.
Friday night’s meet is also a night of celebration as the Tide honors senior All-Americans Lauren Beers and Carley Sims, who helped lead Alabama to back-to-back Southeastern Conference Championships as sophomores and juniors.
“I joke around saying I’m a fourth-year freshman,” Lauren Beers said. “It’s crazy, because the first three years you’re like ‘it’s not that bad, it’s not that bad,’ then your senior year you think ‘oh my gosh, it went so fast.’”
It is also marks the start of Alabama Gymnastics’ Alumni Weekend as those who built, maintained and expanded Alabama gymnastics’ tradition of excellence and legacy of champions return to Coleman Coliseum to cheer on the current team.
During the alumni events, the Tide will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Tide’s 1996 NCAA Championship and the 25th anniversary of the 1991 NCAA Championships. Tide head coach Dana (Dobransky) Duckworth was a sophomore on the 1991 team.
Tickets are available through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum or online at RollTide.com. Keep up with all the latest Alabama gymnastics news via Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube by following BamaGymnastics.
