BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Offensive lineman Richie Petitbon was one of eight Alabama commits participating in the Rivals Five-Star Challenge in Baltimore over the weekend, but he came out with one of the highest honors.
Petitbon earned offensive line MVP honors at the camp. According to Rivals, he showed similar intensity to defensive line MVP Byron Cowart, a 5-star from Seffner, Fla.
“He extended his arms effectively, anchored well and was hard to move,” according to Rivals.
Here are some updates on other Alabama commits:
* Receiver Calvin Ridley shined among skill players, despite not having ideal circumstances.
“Ridley was on the worst of the 7-on-7 teams with the quarterback that struggled the most, but he was still excellent and was one of the true weapons for his team along with (tight end Chris) Clark,” according to Rivals.
* Safety Deionte Thompson was one of the top defensive backs at the challenge.
“Thompson was one of the more pleasant surprises of the weekend and continued to show his ability to cover like a corner with the length of a safety,” according to Rivals.
* Lester Cotton was in the mix for offensive line MVP, but wasn’t as consistent as Petitbon. Still, he did well.
“And strong is the word best used to describe Cotton,” according to Rivals. “He has very good feet, but it’s his powerful hands and strong base that makes him hard to deal with.”
