Big 12 pledges solidarity after kicking commissioner to the curb

By Ample Alfred Pachyderm on September 22, 2011 in Football

Graham Watson – Rivals

When the dust settled on the chaos in the Big 12, nine teams remained committed to the conference, one had moved on and it's leader, Dan Beebe, had been shown the door. Beebe, who had been with the conference since 2003 and its commissioner since 2007, resigned just days after word leaked that Oklahoma was starting a movement to oust him. Apparently, the idea was pretty popular because it didn't take long for Beebe to quietly remove himself from the picture. The only fight came from Beebe's fake namesake on Twitter, who went on an epic rant calling out every school for turning on him. [Read More]

Tide Wrap Up Game Preparations

By Ample Alfred Pachyderm on September 22, 2011 in Football

Edward Egros – WHNT NEWS 19 Sports

The third-ranked Alabama football team wrapped up the biggest portion of its preparations for its SEC opener against Arkansas on Thursday with a 90-minute workout in shells inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Practice Facility. The Crimson Tide focused on fine tuning the game plan, while working on special teams and continuing to pound home fundamentals with its toughest test of the young season ahead on Saturday. Alabama’s ability to find success against an experienced Arkansas defense will be a key factor. “Arkansas has a great defense,” Crimson Tide tight end Brad Smelley said. “Most people talk about their offense, but they have a good defense too, with a lot of experienced guys. They are a SEC defense, and every SEC squad is going to be tough. We are going to have to bring it. We need to continue working and get ready to get after it Saturday.” [Read More]

Arkansas Looks To Stop Tide’s Running Attack

By Ample Alfred Pachyderm on September 22, 2011 in Football

Kurt Voigt – USA Today

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas defensive coordinator Willy Robinson expects the most physical game of the season against Alabama on Saturday. Robinson also knows it will take the No. 14 Razorbacks' best defensive effort to shut down a Crimson Tide running attack that gained 347 yards last week. Trent Richardson (167 yards) and Eddie Lacy (161) became the first running backs to each rush for more than 150 yards in a game for Alabama in the win over North Texas, aided by runs of 43, 58, 67 and 71 yards. The No. 3 Crimson Tide (3-0) are averaging 242 yards rushing per game this season, second in the Southeastern Conference. Stopping that ground attack will be the toughest challenge of the season so for an experienced Arkansas (3-0) defense that entered the season with hopes of joining the SEC's elite. More

SEC Loaded With National Contenders

By Ample Alfred Pachyderm on September 22, 2011 in Football

Associated Press – ToledoBlade.com

If someone survives the Southeastern Conference gauntlet unscathed there’s little doubt they’ll get a spot in the national championship – and a shot at winning the league’s sixth consecutive title. That’s a big if, especially without a clear-cut favorite in the SEC. There are plenty of contenders, including Louisiana State, Alabama, South Carolina, Arkansas and Florida. All are ranked in the top 15. Others like Auburn, Georgia and Mississippi State have been previously ranked and hope to be a factor in November. But there will be many potential season-breaking showdowns before then. LSU and Alabama are the front-runners. They have the vintage formula for winning the SEC – terrific defense coupled with a sound running game. But both teams have questions at quarterback. [Read More]

Alabama, Arkansas will finally show their cards Saturday

By Dale Satterfield - 3sib.com on September 22, 2011 in Football

Alabama's SEC slate begins in earnest Saturday as the Hawgs from Fayetteville visit Tuscaloosa, and the Razorbacks will be bringing their potent aerial attack along with them. A year ago Petrino's Pigs had Bama on the ropes in the fourth quarter until since-departed Ryan Mallett forgot which color jersey he was supposed to throw to, and it's been no secret that Arkansas has been eyeballing this game all offseason. Up to this point, Arkansas has been fine-tuning their offense against cupcakes (no offense, Trojans of Troy). Bama has yet to be tested, either, with only an offensively-challenged Penn State offering up any sort of resistance. [Read More]

Tide TE Brad Smelley talks about Alabama-Arkansas and his lookalike (video)

By Don Kausler Jr. - Press-Register on September 22, 2011 in Football, Video

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – So much for Alabama senior tight end/H-back Brad Smelley to talk about this week with the third-ranked Crimson Tide (3-0) playing host to 14th-ranked Arkansas (3-0) at 2:30 p.m. CDT Saturday. But he probably wasn't expecting the first question to be if he's ever been told he looks like somebody.

Saban: Carter likely headed for redshirt

By Yardbarker.com on September 22, 2011 in Football

Alabama coach Nick Saban says wide receiver Duron Carter isn't likely to play this season. Saban said Wednesday the highly touted junior college transfer and former Ohio State player will probably have to redshirt. Saban says Alabama hasn't received and might not receive ''one piece of information'' on Carter. Without it, he says Carter would have to live there for a year to be eligible. He would have two seasons of eligibility remaining. Carter is the son of former Ohio State and NFL star receiver Cris Carter. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder received Julio Jones' No. 8 and some of the playmaking expectations of the NFL first-round draft pick. Carter spent one season at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College and caught 44 passes for 690 yards and 10 touchdowns. [Read More]
