Spring practice begins with much to be decided

And a lot to look forward to…

The Alabama Crimson Tide began spring practice on Monday with some new faces on the practice field, a lot of expectation, and even more unanswered questions at a few key positions. The main theme for this years spring season will be the question of who is going to replace the exiting stars at the wide receiver, running back, defensive end, and quarterback position. Those positions were vacated by Heisman winner Mark Ingram, stand out wide receiver Julio Jones, 2009 National Championship MVP Marcell Dareus, and the quarterback that led Alabama to the 2009 National Championship, Greg McElroy.

Men’s Basketball Defeats New Mexico in the Second Round of the NIT

The Alabama men's basketball team defeated the New Mexico Lobos in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament at Coleman Coliseum Monday by a score of 74-67. “Overall, I thought it was a great performance by our guys, especially in the second half,” Grant said. “They did a great job of controlling the backboard. From an execution standpoint in the second half, I thought we were outstanding. There were a lot of good things tonight that helped with the win.”

Men’s Basketball defeats Coastal Carolina in the First Round of the NIT

The Alabama men's basketball team beat the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 68-44 in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament at Coleman Coliseum Tuesday. “What we tried to do is hurry them up a little bit and get them to play our tempo, get them out of rhythm and out of sorts so to speak,” Grant said.

Alabama men’s basketball team invited to the NIT

The University of Alabama men’s basketball team has earned a No. 1 seed in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The Crimson Tide earned one of the four No. 1 seeds in the 32-team field because of their 21-11 regular-season record and a 12-4 mark in the Southeastern Conference. “We’re excited about the opportunity to play in the postseason,” UA head coach Anthony Grant said. “We’re certainly grateful to have a No. 1 seed in the NIT and the opportunity to play at home.” The NIT berth is the 11th in UA history with the program holding a 17-13 record in the event. Alabama last appeared in the NIT in 2007 and has advanced to the Final Four five times and the championship game once in 2001.

Alabama Pro Day 2011

The University of Alabama will hold its annual Pro Day on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 in Tuscaloosa, AL. The best draft eligible juniors and seniors of the Alabama football program will participate in NFL style workouts in their campaign to launch their athletic career into the professional level. As usual Alabama will have numerous athletes taking part in this event, as well as having many NFL Scouts and Coaches in attendance. More details to be announed as they become available.

An early look at the Nick Saban statue

Greg McElroy nearly aces NFL’s cognitive test

The media following the NFL Combine in 2011 has been buzzing with shock and awe since the announcement of one players cognitive test scores. Unlike most other potential NFL players, the score wasn't shockingly low but rather incredibly high. The test used to measure the cognitive abilities of NFL players is known as the Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test. The former University of Alabama quarterback, Greg McElroy, scored a 48 on the Wonderlic Test while at the NFL Scouting Combine. This ties as the second highest score on this test in history by a potential NFL player. McElroy's score ties with current Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, and is second only to former Bengals punter Pat McInally who is the only player to have scored a perfect 50.

Nick Saban’s recruitment of Barry Sanders Jr.

For the second time this year, Nick Saban has been involved in a questionable incident involving the Junior Class High School student, and highly sought after son of a legend, Barry Sanders Jr. There are very strict rules governing the recruiting of athletes that are still juniors in high school. Being one of the best recruiters in college football, head coach of the Alabama football program Nick Saban is well aware of the rules and knows how to navigate the recruiting landscape within those rules and still bring home the best results in his recruiting campaign. For coach Saban to go to such lengths and take risks by engaging in practices that are close to the edge of recruiting rules indicates that this young athlete must have enough skill and a lot of potential to be worth the risk just to make an early impression on a recruit.

Much ado about a couple of trees in Alabama

Upon hearing the first reports about some crazed Alabama fan vandalizing the Toomer’s Corner oak trees up there on the Auburn campus, it made me chuckle and comically comment that if I would have been there I would have done it too. Joking aside, I do admit that it is unfortunate that a few mentally unstable people go too far sometimes with their passion for sports, but honestly I am not going to shed a tear over a couple trees and decry this as a tragedy for the sporting world as some people are making it out to be. After reading some of the reports and reflecting on the reaction from the general public, I feel that a lot of people are making far too much of this story.
