Before he landed at Alabama, Kirby Smart's path toward becoming one of the hottest names among college football assistant coaches was filled with cardboard boxes and change-of-address forms. Starting with a graduate assistant position at his alma mater Georgia in 1999 and ending with a job coaching safeties with the Miami Dolphins in 2006, Smart held six different jobs over the first eight years of his career. Though he was primarily stationed in the Southeast and crossed the Mississippi River just once, the instability wore on him.
