Auburn says it gave football recruits multi-year scholarships; Alabama won’t say
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Signing day 2012 offered a blast from the past: The ability to offer multi-year scholarships. The Big Ten encouraged its schools to give football recruits four-year scholarships and many did. The SEC didn’t do as much prodding but at least two schools — Auburn and Florida — said they gave extended financial-aid agreements. The new NCAA rule could offer greater protection to players from getting their scholarships revoked due to how they play. It can also become a recruiting advantage because schools are permitted, but not required, to give up to five-year scholarships rather than annual renewals.

Ragland typically ho-hum, even during big occasion
MADISON, Alabama – On the pure drama scale, this ranked even below Alabama’s 21-0 workmanlike drubbing of LSU in last month’s BCS championship game. Which was appropriate, considering how emphatic Bob Jones’ Reggie Ragland had been about playing football for the Crimson Tide since making his verbal commitment more than a year ago. Just like the title game, this one was never in doubt.

No surprises for Nick Saban; Alabama recruiting class widely regarded as nation’s best
Saban said there were virtually no surprises, unlike a year ago. He admitted there were challenges with the SEC’s new 25-man cap on signees; Saban said 26 players signed with one back-counted toward the 2011 class. “We couldn’t send out a lot of scholarships on a maybe because if too many guys decided to come here we would have gotten penalized,” Saban said. “It worked out well from that standpoint the fact we had a lot of guys commit to us a long time ago.
