Malzahn, Bielema have tough tasks
Arkansas and Auburn both hired head football coaches on Tuesday. Both coaches – Brett Bielema at Arkansas, Gus Malzahn at Auburn – want to restore their respective teams to the upper reaches of the Southeastern Conference’s West Division, even though the “No Vacancy” sign is flashing, the available spots being occupied by Alabama, Texas A&M and LSU. Auburn and Arkansas were up there in recent memory, but when both fell, both fell hard.
Ex-assistant Malzahn takes Auburn coaching job
Auburn has turned to Gus Malzahn to restore a program that made an unprecedented fall two years after winning the national title with Cam Newton operating the then-assistant coach’s high-powered offense to perfection. Malzahn was the Tigers’ offensive coordinator during their 2010 national championship run before heading to Arkansas State for his first college head coaching position. He received a five-year contract worth $2.3 million annually to try to get the team back on solid footing.

Alabama’s highlight reel in the 2012 Iron Bowl is a lengthy one but no play stood out more than Amari Cooper’s second-half touchdown that illustrated the freshman wide out’s big play capabilities. Cooper took what could have been a relatively simple first down reception and ducked under three Auburn defenders to break free for a 29-yard touchdown and into our Alabama Play of the Week archives.

2012 Iron Bowl Auburn vs Alabama Analysis
The Crimson Tide outplayed the Tigers in all phases of the game and sent Auburn home with no wins in the SEC for the first time in several decades. In addition Alabama takes home the Western Division Title for the Southeastern Conference and are still alive for a shot at the National Championship. They will play the Georgia Bulldogs next week at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. With a win against the Bulldogs, Alabama is almost gauranteed a shot at the BCS Title.
Alabama clenches West Title and SEC Championship birth with Shutout of Auburn
Alabama ran Auburn out of Bryant-Denny Stadium with their tiger tails tucked between their legs after they held Auburn scoreless in this years Iron Bowl. This win secures Alabama’s spot in the SEC Championship against the Georgia Bulldogs next week. With a win against the Bulldogs, the Crimson Tide will be in position to play for back to back National Championships.

The Alabama Crimson Tide dominated their rival, the Auburn Tigers, throughout the Iron Bowl in this shutout by racking up 49 unanswered points at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. With this win Alabama clenches the SEC West Title and a birth in the SEC Championship game against the Georgia Bulldogs at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Iron Bowl ticket prices are down while SEC and BCS championship costs go up
Iron Bowl ticket prices in the resale market are down, the byproduct of Auburn’s historically poor season and some Alabama fans waiting to purchase SEC Championship Game and BCS Championship Game seats. Alabama opened as a 34-point favorite for Saturday’s game against Auburn, the biggest spread in recorded betting history in the series. The largest previous spread was 21 points by Alabama last year. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out who’s supposed to win,” said Steve Susce, co-owner of AAATix in Hoover. “With Auburn having such a tough year, their fans are intelligent people who value their dollars. Then again, that eases up the prices and people who have never afforded to go to the Iron Bowl maybe can go. We’re selling just as many tickets, but just not at the prices we’re used to.”
