Poll: What playoff format would work best for college football?
NCAA president Mark Emmert has voiced support for a four-team playoff for college football and even Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has said he’s open to the idea of abandoning the BCS. This week, Arizona State president Michael Crow pitched an eight-team playoff to the Arizona Republic, saying, “In the Pac-12, we are not strong supporters of the present model.” Funny how one conference winning six straight national titles can force even the most stubborn rats to abandon the sinking BCS ship.
Nick Saban begins what he calls “the process” by selling recruits on an opportunity to grow in Alabama’s pro-style program, everything from the way they are coached to the way they are treated. Those that blossom could compete for national championships using a blueprint he offers, which also happens to detail the path for the elite to reach the NFL.
Speaking Monday at The Birmingham Tip-Off Club via video conference, Calipari said he mentions Alabama’s performance in timeouts to his team. He also called Nick Saban the day after the Crimson Tide won the national title. “I was blown away by their flawless play — blown away,” Calipari said. “And I said to him, ‘You may be the best at what we do in any sport. In that environment, all the talking, all the jabbering, all the tickets, all that’s going on, you got your team to focus like that and play flawless. And then with two minutes to go there’s a penalty and you throw off your headgear!’”
Grant said the decision was based on “an accumulation” of things, not a single incident. Mitchell did not start in that game – the first time this season he was out of the starting lineup – but scored 14 points in 31 minutes of action. He also had to leave the game after a blow to the head, and twice left the bench to return to the training room in the second half before re-entering the game.
The University of Alabama men’s basketball team returns to the road to face in-state Southeastern Conference rival Auburn in the first of two meetings between the programs this season. Tipoff at Auburn Arena is scheduled for 8 p.m. CST on ESPNU and the radio affiliates of the Crimson Tide Sports Network.
As if things on the road for Alabama basketball are not difficult enough, the Crimson Tide will be away from home for two games this week and almost certainly will be without star forward Tony Mitchell for at least one of them.
Marijuana possession charges against former Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick have been dismissed, according to a report from Sports Business Journal’s Liz Mullen. Kirkpatrick was arrested Jan. 17 in Palmetto, Florida, and charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana along with another former Alabama player, Chris Rogers.
TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – Alabama forward Tony Mitchell has been suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the men’s basketball team, a school spokesman announced Monday. There is no timetable for Mitchell’s return, the spokesman said. The junior is averaging 13.1 points and 7 rebounds in 21 games played.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – On the strength of the highest team score in the nation last week, the Alabama gymnastics team jumped four spots to No. 2 in the latest national rankings. The Crimson Tide is led by senior Ashley Priess, who holds down the nation’s No. 1 spot in the all-around, and its vault squad, which is once again ranked No. 1.
LSU quarterback Jarrett Lee, who remained on the sidelines for the entirety of the Tigers’ 21-0 loss to Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 9, told Scott Rabalais in an interview with the Baton Rouge Advocate that he believes he could have helped LSU’s struggling offense in the game.
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Have you heard the joke about a gentleman’s agreement in college football recruiting? It goes like this. Once a recruit commits to a college, every rival stops recruiting him. It’s done out of honor because winning is vastly overrated so every coach falls in line because they’re gentlemen. Wait, that’s not a joke? Some Big Ten coaches actually believe in not flipping commitments?
SEA ISLAND, Ga. – The University of Alabama freshman Justin Thomas won the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational on Sunday at Ocean Forest Golf Club. All five Crimson Tide golfers competing in the event finished in the top 20 on the par-72, 7,321-yard layout.
