Separately or together, each has served at least twice as an apprentice with Nick Saban, the Donald Trump of college football.
As the University of Alabama’s defensive coordinator, Kirby Smart placed a heavy emphasis on stripping the ball throughout the offseason. The initial dividends were paid Saturday, as the Crimson Tide forced its first two fumbles of the season against Penn State. Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick forced both of them.
