Alabama’s Kirby Smart named the assistant coach of the year by the AFCA
For the second time in the past four years, Alabama’s Kirby Smart has been recognized as college football’s top assistant coach. The Crimson Tide’s defensive coordinator was named the assistant coach of the year Tuesday by the American Football Coaches Association. In 2009, Smart won the Broyles Award that goes to the top assistant coach.
Kirby Smart Named AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year
Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart was named the American Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year, the organization announced Tuesday. The honor comes on the heels of winning the Broyles Award in 2009. Under Smart’s direction, the Alabama defense is one of the best in the nation. Alabama is ranked No. 3 in rushing defense (76.20 ypg allowed), No. 9 in pass efficiency defense (102.76 rating), No. 2 in total defense (247.80 ypg allowed) and No. 1 in scoring defense (11.10 ppg allowed) in 2012.

Before Alabama football players can run drills, they have to learn what to do. Before they can run the Alabama defense, they have to know who goes where and who does this and that. That foundation is being poured now. It’s not as if there was more talk than action Sunday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, but people who attended Fan Day would see more action if they could watch a practice one week later. Especially if the Crimson Tide would be in full pads.

Separately or together, each has served at least twice as an apprentice with Nick Saban, the Donald Trump of college football.
