BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — For the second time this season, redshirt freshman Rachael Reddy was selected as the Southeastern Conference Women’s Freshman Runner of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday. She was also named the SEC Women’s Runner and Women’s Freshman Runner of the Week on Sept. 8.
A native of Mountain Brook, Ala., Reddy won her second race of the season when she cruised to the Cowboy Jamboree individual title in Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday, Sept. 26. She finished the 6,000-meter course in a time of 21:02.30, the third-fastest 6k time posted by a freshman in the conference this season. Reddy is the first Crimson Tide runner since 2008 to earn conference Freshman Runner of the Week honors multiple times in one season (Sara Vaughn).
Behind Reddy’s victory, Alabama finished as the runner-up to then-No. 28 Oklahoma State, as the Cowgirls edged out the Crimson Tide by two points (39 to 41). That result propelled the Tide to 29th in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Coaches Poll. It is the first time since 1995 that the women’s team has earned a national ranking.
Reddy and the Alabama women’s squad will return to competition on Friday, Oct. 16 when the Harry Pritchett Running Park serves as the host site of the annual Crimson Classic. The meet will also serve as the team’s Power of Pink event.
