CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Alabama women’s golf team fired a 1-over par 289 to sit in second place after the opening round of the 2015 Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational.
The Crimson Tide started the morning at hole No. 10 and struggled through the first nine holes, shooting only three birdies compared to 11 bogeys. The team heated up from there, recording 13 birdies, including four each from senior Janie Jackson and freshman Cheyenne Knight.
Jackson, Knight, and junior Cammie Gray all finished the round with an even par 72 and are tied for fifth in the individual standings. Sophomore Lakareber Abe and senior Emma Talley both carded a 1-over 73.
Defending tournament champion Duke leads the field going into Saturday. The Blue Devils shot a 3-under 285, the only team to record a total under par. Louisville and NC State are just behind Alabama, finishing the first 18 holes at 4-over 292.
