BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southeastern Conference league office named Crimson Tide forward Laura Lee Smith to the 2014 Community Service Team on Thursday. The SEC Community Service Team highlights one athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.
Smith, a senior, has been an active member in the Tuscaloosa community, as well as her home state of Mississippi throughout her four years at Alabama. Smith is currently the president of UA’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has been a part of the organization since her freshman year.
During her time with SAAC, Smith has helped organize events in the West Alabama community that include a Halloween Extravaganza, an event put on for local children to celebrate Halloween with student-athletes, as well as Project Angel Tree, an initiative partnering local churches and organizations with the children of incarcerated parents to ensure that the children receive Christmas presents during the holiday season.
The senior standout has also been a part of the local Make-A-Wish Foundation and Boys and Girls Club of West Alabama through her Chi Omega sorority. Smith has devoted many hours to helping at the Community Soup Bowl and West Alabama Food Bank while also aiding the cleanup efforts in Tuscaloosa following the devastating tornado that ripped through the state on April 27, 2011.
At home in Jackson, Miss., Smith has volunteered her time at the University of Mississippi Medical Center as well as the Lantern Medical Clinic as she furthers her preparation for medical school, which she will begin upon her graduation from The University of Alabama this spring.
The 2014 SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year, Smith maintains a 3.98 grade point average and was a National Merit Finalist. She also received recognition from CoSIDA/Capital One for her efforts in the classroom, being named an Academic All-District 4 First Team in 2014.
Smith finished the season with a team-leading seven goals and 20 total points and helped lead the Tide to a 10-7-3 record on the year.
