TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Newcomers Andie Daniell and Joanna Nena Savva collected three wins for the Alabama women’s tennis team at its 28th Roberta Alison Fall Classic on Friday.
Daniell won a pair of straight-set victories, first a 6-2, 6-2 decision over UAB junior Pardis Kianoush and then a 6-3, 6-3 win against Mississippi State senior Georgiana Patrasc, to advance to the finals of her singles draw where she will face Ole Miss sophomore Natalie Suk. Savva was edged out in her first match of the day, falling 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to Tulane senior Jacqui Katz but came back to dominate Troy sophomore Efriliya Herlina, 6-1, 6-1, in the back draw. Savva is matched up with UAB junior Catherine Ragon in the consolation finals.
In doubles, the duo dropped an 8-5 decision to Georgia Tech junior Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and sophomore Alexis Prokopuik to move to the back of the draw where the Crimson Tide team will face Northwestern juniors Brooke Rischbieth and Jillian Rooney in the second round.
Play resumes on Sunday at 8 a.m. CT with the final round of singles. The remaining two rounds of doubles are slated to follow. Matches will take place at the Alabama Tennis Stadium, the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility and the Rec Center courts.
