TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Freshman Andie Daniell defeated Ole Miss sophomore Natalie Suk in a lengthy three-set match to claim her singles draw of the 28th annual Roberta Alison Fall Classic, held at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium and the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility, on Saturday. Junior Joanna Nena Savva also picked up a singles win on the final day of the event.
Daniell’s match started outdoors, then was moved indoors as the rain began to fall midway through the second set. Suk toughed out the first set in a tiebreak, seven points to three, but Daniell earned an early break in the second. At 3-1, the match was halted due to rain and moved indoors. The Crimson Tide rookie maintained momentum and won the set 6-2. The final set was close the entire way, with Daniell able to come away with the victory in a decisive tiebreak for a 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-6(5) triumph.
Savva also ended singles play on a high note, defeating junior Catherine Ragon of UAB 6-3, 6-1 in the consolation finals of her draw. The two Alabama netters teamed up to compete in one doubles match on the day as well, falling to the Northwestern duo of juniors Brooke Rischbieth and Jillian Rooney 6-4.
The Roberta Alison Fall Classic marked the end of the fall season for the majority of the women’s squad. However, Daniell and junior Erin Routliffe will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 12 when they take part in the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The four-day tournament will be played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the home of the U.S. Open.
